Mentorship Program Coordinator

The mentoring program is an idea we want to get running, and this is the role it waits on. It is the person who makes the matches happen and then makes sure they stick.

What’s involved

• Getting the first intake off the ground, then running two a year, in February and August
• Recruiting mentors, especially in the fields we are short in — health, engineering, trades, finance and IT
• Matching mentees to mentors by field and by fit, not just by who is available
• Making sure mentors have a current Working with Children Check where they need one, and helping them get it
• Checking in with both sides every couple of months, and stepping in when a pair goes quiet
• Keeping a simple record of who is matched with whom and when the match started

Who this suits

Somebody organised who does not mind chasing people. Much of the job is a polite follow-up message to a mentor who meant to reply three weeks ago. If you have worked in a university careers service, HR, teaching or program coordination, this will feel familiar — but you do not need any of that. The skill that actually matters is remembering to follow up.

• Help with the Working with Children Check process
• A reference, and named credit for the program in our annual report

Worth being straight about

Nobody is matched yet, so this is a start-it role rather than a run-it role. You would be deciding how matching actually works — which is more work at the beginning and more interesting than inheriting somebody else’s spreadsheet.

Every introduction in this program would pass through you, which means you end up knowing everybody: the students and the professionals. It is the best-connected volunteer role we have.
