Settlement program

A lot of people have arrived from overseas in the last couple of years. The first year is the hardest one, and almost none of the difficulty is the sort of thing an office can solve. Which school to enrol at. Which doctor takes new patients. How the tram ticket works. Whether the letter that arrived is important. Who to call when a landlord is being unreasonable.

The people who already know all of that live two streets away. This program’s only job would be to introduce them.

The thinking

Each newly arrived household is matched with one settled household, chosen for three things, in this order:

1. Where they live — close enough to drop in without planning it. This matters more than anything else on the list.
2. Background in common — region, language, and whether there are children of similar ages.
3. What the family actually needs — a household with school-age kids paired with one that has been through school enrolment recently.

The pair would be introduced in person by a coordinator, not over the phone. After that, how often they see each other is up to them.

What we would ask of a host

Not money, and not a formal commitment of hours:

• Meet in the first fortnight, and again in the first month
• Be reachable for questions — most of the help is a five-minute phone call
• Come along the first time for the things that are daunting alone: a Centrelink appointment, a school enrolment, a doctor’s visit, opening a bank account
• Tell the coordinator if the pairing is not working, so we can rematch rather than let it quietly lapse

Hosts would not be caseworkers and would not be expected to solve anything on their own. Anything needing a professional gets referred through the help directory, with the coordinator kept in the loop.

Honest status

This is an idea on the board. Nothing is matched, and no names have been collected yet. It is here so it stays visible and so people can say whether they want it.

What we need first

• A coordinator to own it. This will not start without one
• Enough hosts across the suburbs where new arrivals are actually settling
• A sense of numbers on both sides, which is what the interest form below is for
• A short written guide for hosts, so nobody has to guess what is expected
• A safeguarding check for any pairing involving young people on their own
